Indonesia-Australia

(Free West Papua) A short note from Sidney 23 Feb 2009.

Australian  government is going the wrong way about improving relations with Indonesia if it continues to ignore the Aborigines (Indigenous Australians) while talking about West Papua issue. The genocide of Aborigines is a bad history that Indonesia should avoid in West Papua.

If Australia really wants to improve the relationship with Indonesia, we should be actually talking and discussing the issues of Aborigines genocide and the human rights situation in West Papua simultaneously. By ignoring it, it’s only putting it on the backburner and one day will explode and probably destroy the good image of Australian people in the world.

    hmm,
I think their maybe some faulty logic here. Historically there was an aboriginal genocide but the population of Australian Aborigines is now growing well above the national average. Unlike Papuans most Australians Aborigines live in the city and have standards of living well above the average Javanese let alone the Papuans. I am not saying that Australia has an unblemished record on race relations, far from it. But to compare the two issues is like comparing chalk and cheese.
What the two issues do have in common is both indigenous peoples are still dealing with unresolved historical trauma. the national apology by Kevin Rudd was a step in the right direction, perhaps Indonesia will someday in reconcilliation with Papuans recognise past wrongs. Personally I think That if SBY is returned this year this may in fact happen.
